The Köln Concert

Staging & Choreography: Trajal Harrell
Premiere: 12. September 2020
Venue: Pfauen

Trajal Harrell responds to the phyiscal distance rules for the stage with a plan he has been pursuing for years: a choreography to Keith Jarrett's Köln Concert, the most successful piano solo recording of all time that Harrell opens with songs by Joni Mitchell. It is a matter of learning anew, how to make theatre. Dance. In front of an audience. With distance and caution. But not with any less devotion.

Medea*

After: Euripides
Staging: Leonie Böhm
Premiere: 19. September 2020
Venue: Schiffbau-Box

“Anger in a woman is akin to madness; it felt like madness inside of me, it looked like madness to others. Maybe if they let us be angry, we wouldn’t go mad.” In Burn it down, US-American author and editor Lilly Dancyger gathers voices about women and their anger. Leonie Böhm positions this anger centre stage during an evening with an actress only – Maja Beckmann – who is also a mother and musician Johannes Rieder. The starting point for this evening is the character of Medea, who gets caught up in a game of intrigue and brings up the issue of power relations. Come rage with us!

Das Weinen (Das Wähnen)

Based on texts by Dieter Roth
Staging: Christoph Marthaler
Premiere: 20. September 2020
Venue: Pfauen

Two exceptional Swiss men who have lots in common: Dieter Roth und Christoph Marthaler both share, for example, a distinct fondness of the weathering of the body, spirit and chocolate given the slow passing of time. In the late 1980s, Roth gave two special editions of his texts to Christoph Marthaler. Now, almost 30 years (and Corona-related a few more months) later, we are witnessing the first highly public encounter between Roth and Marthaler.

Frühlings Erwachen

By Lucien Haug after Frank Wedekind
Staging: Suna Gürler
Premiere: 2. October 2020
Venue: Pfauen

When teenagers and adults talk about sex, soon enough comes a: Stop! Because sex is considered dangerous, still. Frank Wedekind’s scandalous piece Frühlings Erwachen was subject to censorship in Berlin in 1891 yet was published in Zürich. In spring, Director Suna Gürler and playwright Lucien Haug along with young people and adult members of the ensemble havere-written Wedekind’s text for the present. Forced into isolation by the corona lockdown, they now get back in touch with omniscience and ignorance, and enter the dangerzone of shame, curiosity, naivety, experimentation and playful power – power that doesn’t only play a role in sexy posturing on Instagram or instantaneous postured sex on YouPorn.
